Development:
In a lengthy letter published on February 17, 2022, Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer revealed, among other things, that the fourth season would be released in two parts, that they planned to create a spinoff series for Netflix that would take place in the show's universe, and that the show would be renewed for a fifth and final season. In 2017, producers hinted at a fifth season run of Stranger Things, although the pair had initially stated the show would run for no more than four seasons.
As with previous seasons, preparations for Stranger Things Season 5 started before the premiere of the previous season. But in contrast to their typical development rhythm, the COVID-19 pandemic generated difficulties that allowed the Duffers to fully outline the fifth season before the fourth had even started filming.
Based on the comments they got following the publication of season four, they then went back and revised their outline, changing the events and structure of season five and even changing the series' conclusion. By September 2023, executive producer Shawn Levy was reported to be directing at least one episode of the Stranger Things Season 5. Frank Darabont returned from retirement to direct two episodes, having been a huge fan of the series alongside his wife.
Filming:
The Stranger Things Season 5's Jim Hopper scenes were initially supposed to be filmed in Atlanta concurrently with Harbour's scenes as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie Thunderbolts* (2025). The writers' strike, however, delayed both movies due to the 2023 labour disputes in Hollywood.
Consequently, Ryder shot Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) during the conflicts before season filming started, so the Duffers' original agreement with Ryder when she joined the show in mid-2015—that she could take a break from the series to reprise her role as Lydia Deetz in a potential Beetlejuice (1988) sequel that Tim Burton had been seriously planning since 2000—did not need to be granted.
Production of the fifth season commenced on January 8, 2024, following a considerable postponement brought on by the disagreements. By March 2024, Brown said, she had read the script for six episodes and that nine months were remaining to shoot.
Maya Hawke disclosed on the "Podcrushed" podcast on June 27 that there will be "basically eight films" in Stranger Things Season 5, with "very long" episodes. Ross Duffer announced that manufacturing was halfway completed on July 3. Finn Wolfhard told People that they were "almost done shooting" in October 2024.
