Based on the Spider-Man character from Marvel Comics, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (also known as The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Rise of Electro internationally) is an American superhero movie from 2014. The film was directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Jeff Pinkner, based on a story conceived by the three with James Vanderbilt.
It was produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel Entertainment, Arad Productions, Inc., Matt Tolmach Productions, K/O Paper Products, and Ingenious Film Partners, and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. It’s the follow-up to 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, the fifth theatrical Spider-Man movie, and the last in the Amazing Spider-Man series.
Andrew Garfield plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the movie, and he is accompanied by Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, Campbell Scott, Embeth Davidtz, Paul Giamatti, and Sally Field. In the movie, Peter Parker battles the supervillain Electro and his closest friend Harry Osborn, who is terminally ill from a genetic condition, while also trying to protect his fiancée Gwen Stacy and look into the deaths of his parents.
Following the popularity of The Amazing Spider-Man, work on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 started. Between December 2012 and February 2013, DeHaan, Giamatti, Felicity Jones, and Chris Cooper were cast. From February to June 2013, filming was conducted in New York City. Two worldwide premieres were placed between March 31 and April 10 of the same year, and the movie was released in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on May 2, 2014, in the United States.
Reviews of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 were mixed; some applauded the action scenes, Hans Zimmer’s orchestral soundtrack, the chemistry between Stone and Garfield, and the visual effects; others questioned the narrative and the film’s excessive number of plotlines. Future Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film projects starring The Amazing Spider-Man were cancelled when Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios struck a deal in February 2015 to share the film rights to the character and relaunch him.
As part of Phase Three of the MCU, Tom Holland will take over as Peter Parker/Spider-Man starting with Captain America: Civil War (2016). Meanwhile, a new standalone movie called Spider-Man: Homecoming will hit theaters on July 7, 2017, and its sequel Spider-Man: Far From Home will debut on July 2, 2019. With Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Garfield and Foxx returned to their respective roles, tying the movie to the MCU through the multiverse premise.

Richard Parker, a former scientist at Oscorp and businessman, makes a video message to explain his disappearance. He tries to escape on a private plane that an assassin has taken over, along with his spouse Mary Parker. The pair perishes in the jet disaster.
Two years following his altercation with Dr. Curt Connors, Peter, the son of Richard and Mary, is still fighting crime as Spider-Man in the current day and has captured Russian criminal Aleksei Sytsevich. Following their high school graduation, Gwen Stacy breaks up with Peter because of his misgivings about their connection, which dates back to when she promised her late father not to become close to him.
Harry Osborn, a boyhood buddy of Peter’s, visits his dying father, Norman Osborn, the CEO of Oscorp when he gets back home. He clarifies that Harry is experiencing the onset of his genetic sickness at this age. Harry becomes the new CEO after Norman passes away.
Capable electrical engineer Max Dillon unintentionally shocks himself while working in an Oscorp facility, falling into a tank of genetically modified electric eels. He becomes a living electric generator as a result of their onslaught. Gwen informs Peter that she might go to England in the meantime if she is awarded a scholarship to attend Oxford University. Dillon walks into Times Square unaware of the full scope of his power, unintentionally causing a power outage, and is stopped by Peter in the guise of Spider-Man. Dr. Ashley Kafka, a German scientist, examines Dillon in the Ravencroft Institute.
As for Harry, his disease is beginning to show signs, and he utilizes what Norman told him to surmise that Spider-Man’s blood might be able to rescue him. He requests Peter’s assistance in locating Spider-Man from Peter, who has been selling pictures of the superhero to the Daily Bugle. Peter is dubious about the impact the transfusion would have and fears Harry would experience a mutation akin to Dr. Connors.
His refusal to accept Harry as Spider-Man subsequently infuriates him. Donald Menken, vice president of Oscorp, fires Harry as CEO and seizes control of the company, accusing him of covering up Dillon’s accident. To regain access to the Oscorp building, Harry offers to make a deal with Dillon, who is now going by the name “Electro.” When Electro agrees, he murders Dr. Kafka.
Harry discovers the venom of the genetically modified spiders that have now been destroyed upon returning to Oscorp. His condition worsens and he becomes a goblin-like creature after he makes Menken inject him with the venom, but an armoured suit’s emergency protocol keeps him healthy.
In the meantime, Peter discovers his father’s covert laboratory in a deserted subway station and finds out that he had to escape since he wouldn’t help Norman with his intentions to utilize his research to create biogenetic weapons. Oscorp cannot replicate the spiders without his blood, he learns because his father created them using his DNA. Peter later learns that Gwen was allowed to receive the Oxford scholarship after leaving the lab. After declaring his love for her, they decide to travel to England together.
Peter and Gwen restore power and overload Electro’s body, killing him after Electro creates another power outage. Arriving with Norman’s arsenal of weapons, Harry poses as the Green Goblin. When he sees Gwen, he figures out Spider-Man’s true identity and, vowing vengeance for not getting the blood transfusion, he leads her to the summit of a huge clock tower.
The Goblin is defeated by Peter, but he is unable to save Gwen, who perishes. Depressed and full of guilt, Peter gives up being Spider-Man. Harry is dealing with the fallout from his metamorphosis while incarcerated in Ravencroft five months later. During a visit from his associate Gustav Fiers, the two talk about starting their team. Harry gives Fiers the instruction to begin with the prison escapee Sytsevich. Donning an electronic armour set, Sytsevich goes by the name “Rhino” and tears up the streets. After seeing Gwen’s graduation speech, Peter is inspired again and goes back to face him in his Spider-Man disguise.
Filming of The Amazing Spider-Man 2:
Following his drafting of the first draft, James Vanderbilt was hired in March 2011 to write The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) sequel. The following year, he was joined by Jeff Pinkner in rewriting the first draft, with screenplay credit going to Kurtzman, Orci, and Pinkner, as well as Vanderbilt. The antagonist of the sequel was hinted at in the 2012 movie. According to Webb, there will be more development in the origin tale in the second part. Although Webb stated in June 2012 that he was not sure if he would return, it was revealed on September 28, 2012, that he would be returning to direct the follow-up.

Talks about Shailene Woodley playing Mary Jane Watson began in October 2012. Woodley had finished recording her bit part by March of 2013. Garfield said, “I believe every one of those scenes took place in our backyards.” We had two or three shots where I was chatting over the fence, and we never got to film the scene when we were riding a motorcycle together. “A creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship,” director Webb remarked, stating that Woodley’s character was cut out of the film in mid-June.
Marc Webb announced on Twitter on February 4, 2013, that principal photography has started on the sequel, which would be shot anamorphically on 35mm film instead of digitally like the last picture. According to Sony, this will be the first Spider-Man movie to be shot entirely in New York state. A vehicle chase scene was shot in Rochester since upstate New York has laxer speed limits. Some people were offended by the choice to film in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, close to the Passover holiday because they thought it was culturally insensitive and would lead to parking issues.
