Storyline:

When Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduea) returns to Palmera City after earning his college degree, Blue Beetle begins. But his house is not exactly as he left it. He discovers the Scarab, a weird ancient artefact of alien origin, and searches for a way to move forward in the world and adult life.

The Scarab chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host and covers him with a highly advanced suit of armour with amazing (and erratic) abilities, such as the ability to make weapons. However, evil powers are determined to obtain the Scarab. Victoria Kord and her thugs (Susan Sarandon) enter. The Latino family is central to the narrative, which is something that hasn’t yet been portrayed on the big screen via the perspective of the superhero genre, according to director Angel Manuel Soto. Jaime’s nearest relatives also play significant roles in the plot of Blue Beetle, which is the first superhero film to include a Latino character at the forefront.

Over the years, the Blue Beetle’s personality has changed a lot. Dan Garret, the first, had superhuman abilities thanks to a unique vitamin and later a “sacred scarab.” Ted Kord, who went to the main DC Comics universe during Crisis on Infinite Earths, was the second Blue Beetle. Ted employed technology to strengthen himself. Last but not least, Jaime Reyes, who receives his powers from the Scarab depicted in this film, is the Beetle that DC Comics truly developed.

Filming of Blue Beetle:

By the end of November 2018, Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films were working on a Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle-based movie. The screenplay was written by Mexican-born Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. It was to be the first DC Extended Universe (DCEU) movie and the first live-action superhero movie with a Latino lead, and Zev Foreman was executive producing it for Warner Bros. Blue Beetle was one of the projects planned for release in 2021 as part of the new DC Films president Walter Hamada’s plan for the DCEU, which by December 2020 included the release of multiple mid-budget movies annually exclusively on the streaming service HBO Max as opposed to in cinemas.

In February 2021, the film’s director, Puerto Rican Angel Manuel Soto, was brought on board. However, Warner Bros. had planned for him to direct a movie based on Reyes’ Blue Beetle. Soto had offered many concepts during a call received from Warner Bros., including a movie about Bane’s origin tale. In April, Blue Beetle was listed among the movies DC planned to produce in 2022 or 2023. By that August, when filming was scheduled to start in early 2022, John Rickard, the president of production at the Safran Company, was producing the movie for HBO Max.

Instead of being made specifically for HBO Max, Warner Bros. announced in December 2021 that the movie would be released in theatres in August 2023. Mid-April 2022 saw Soto and cameraman Pawel Pogorzelski travel to El Paso, Texas, where they spoke with historians, singers, muralists, and painters to get a sense of the vibe of the city. After being identified as a producer that October, Peter Safran worked on the movie until he and James Gunn were named co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios the following month. Rickard and Foreman were listed as the film’s other producers.

By May 25, 2022, principal filming had started on the untitled movie, which was filmed mostly at Wilder Studios in Decatur, Georgia, and throughout the Atlanta metropolitan area. The director of photography was Pawel Pogorzelski. Puerto Rico and El Paso were also used for filming. Sarandon finished filming her portions by the end of June, and Trujillo declared that production was nearly over in early July. On July 18, Puerto Rico’s filming came to an end. In February 2023, there were two more days of photography.
