Fast X

Introduction of Fast X:
Dan Mazeau and Justin Lin, who also collaborated on the story with Zach Dean, created the screenplay for the 2023 American action movie “Fast X” (also known as Fast & Furious 10). Fast X is directed by Louis Leterrier. The tenth major instalment and eleventh overall in the Fast & Furious franchise, it is the follow-up to F9 (2021). Aside from Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Scott Eastwood, Daniela Melchior, Alan Ritchson, Helen Mirren, Brie Larson, Rita Moreno, Jason Statham, Jason Momoa, and Charlize Theron, it stars Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto.
In the movie, Toretto is tasked with defending his family against Dante Reyes (Momoa), who is out for vengeance after losing his family’s money and his father. Its IMDb rating is 5.9/10. Lin was confirmed to return to directing with the main cast attached, with a tenth movie scheduled since 2014 and a two-part conclusion planned in October 2020.
When principal photography of Fast X started in April 2022, the movie’s official title was made public. Despite keeping his writing and producing credits, Lin resigned as director later that month due to “creative differences.” A week later, Leterrier was hired to take over as his replacement, and he contributed several uncredited rewrites to the script.
For the film’s soundtrack, veteran franchise composer Brian Tyler made a comeback. Fast X is the eighth-most expensive movie ever made, with a projected $340 million production budget. London, Rome, Turin, other Italian cities, Lisbon, and Los Angeles served as the locations for the filming, which lasted until that August.

The Space Cinema in Rome hosted the premiere of Fast X on May 12, 2023. On May 17, it was first made available in many nations in Europe and South America, and on May 19, Universal Pictures released it in the United States. The movie Fast X garnered mixed reviews from critics; praise was given for the action scenes and Momoa’s performance, but criticism was levelled at the writing and direction. Fast X is now the fourth-highest-grossing movie of 2023 with a global total of almost $719 million. A follow-up is being worked on and will debut in 2025.

Storyline:
The Agency asks Dominic Toretto and his group to smuggle a computer chip during its transit through Rome, Italy. While the rest of the team—Roman Pearce, Tej Parker, Han Lue, and Ramsey—travels to Rome, Dom and his wife Letty Ortiz stay behind with their son Brian “Little B” Marcos. Dante Reyes, the son of drug lord Hernan Reyes, has turned Cipher’s crew against her and is using them to attack Dom in retaliation for his father’s death and the loss of his family’s money ten years earlier, says a wounded Cipher when she arrives at Dom’s house and informs him and Letty of this.
When Little Nobody claims that there isn’t an Agency mission in Rome, Dom, and Letty understand Dante was playing a ruse and head to save the squad. In Rome, Dante throws a bomb made of a metal ball into the streets. Letty is taken into custody, but Dom reduces the damage by pushing it into the Tiber River. Since Mr Nobody vanished, Agent Aimes, the agency’s de facto commander, has assumed responsibility for the bombing and launched a manhunt in the belief that Dom and his group are to blame.
In Los Angeles, Little B is saved by Dom’s brother Jakob along with Mia, their sister. With Mia’s consent, Jakob then transports Little B to a hidden place in Portugal where they will wait for Dom. Tess, the daughter of Mr. Nobody, discovers Dom in Naples and tells him that Dante is in Rio de Janeiro because she is sure of the team’s innocence. Tess uses God’s Eye to locate Dom.

Dom confronts Dante there, where he also runs across Isabel Neves, the sister of Little B’s late mother Elena. Dom later challenges Dante to a race alongside Isabel and Diogo, who is also Dom’s ally. Dante triumphs even though Isabel is hurt and Diogo is killed. Tess visits Letty at the black site and secretly injures her to transport her to the care facility of the prison, where Letty meets Cipher. They learn that the black site is in Antarctica, and they have to band together to get out. Deckard Shaw is consulted by Dom’s team in London.
Aime teams up with Dom to combat Dante. Little B is found in Portugal by Dante, who then abducts him. Mercenaries have Dom surrounded, but Jakob gives his life to eliminate them all so Dom can free his kid. Once more, Dante confronts Dom and his kid, but as Roman, Tej, Han, and Ramsey approach by jet to help Dom, Dom realizes too late that he needs to turn the plane back. Aimes, who it later turns out was working with Dante, then shoots down the plane, leaving the fates of all the team members unclear.
Dom attempts to escape Dante’s trap by driving off the edge of the dam they are on, but Dante has set off the explosives that he has placed inside the dam, leaving Dom and Little B’s fates unknowable as well. Gisele Yashar, who was thought to be lost in Antarctica, emerges from a submersible to save Letty and Cipher.
In the middle of the credits, Dante calls Luke Hobbs to inform him that his father’s killers are moving on to him.

Filming of Fast X:
On April 21, 2022, the title of the movie was announced, and it was also announced that Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang, and Charlize Theron would be reprising their roles. Brewster’s character was allegedly left out of an earlier script, which Diesel changed. The production budget for Fast X was initially estimated to be $300 million in May 2022, but that figure was later amended to $340 million that November.
The cast was reportedly paid $100 million for their participation, with Diesel receiving $20 million of that sum. Additionally, growing production costs brought on by global inflation and fees for pandemic testing stipulated by COVID-19 safety regulations were included in the budget’s rising costs (which take into account tax-incentive offsets).
Diesel reportedly “stressed” over the increased budget and the creative choices in Fast X, according to unnamed sources who spoke to Radar. The sources claimed that Universal views Diesel as “simultaneously the greatest star [they’ve] had and their biggest headache” and that “[Diesel] doesn’t let anybody forget [how] the Fast & Furious franchise is important to the entire [film] industry].

A week after the start of the principal photography of Fast X, Lin left the project as director owing to “creative differences,” causing the primary production to stall. Lin stayed on board, though, serving as a producer. According to later rumours, Lin and Diesel had a falling out on the set because Diesel allegedly showed up unprepared, was frequently late, and forgot his lines.
A disagreement with Diesel reportedly reached a point where Lin shouted, “This movie is not worth my mental health.” Lin reportedly forewent pay in the range of $10–20 million to leave the project. He was also upset about rewrites to his screenplay, shifting shooting locations, and the failure to cast one of the movie’s villains. While the studio looked for a new director, second unit work continued in the United Kingdom. For the production halt, Universal Pictures reportedly paid $1 million per day.
The studio considered replacing Lin with former Fast & Furious directors David Leitch and F. Gary Gray, who previously helmed Hobbs & Shaw and The Fate of the Furious, respectively. However, neither was likely to step in due to their commitments to Lift and The Fall Guy (both 2024), respectively. James Wan, the director of Furious 7, was also regarded as a “viable option,” but he was tied to commitments to Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023), the final DC Extended Universe (DCEU) movie.
He had previously been considered to direct The Fate of the Furious and F9 but declined due to his taxing experience on Furious 7. Variety claimed that without significant modifications to the screenplay, getting an “A-list” director was unlikely. Instead, Universal would probably choose a second unit director who was “experienced” in high-budget action movies. Louis Leterrier was introduced as Lin’s replacement on May 2, 2022.

Leterrier already had a working relationship with the studio because he had previously helmed the MCU movie The Incredible Hulk (2008). He also had experience with the franchise because he and franchise star Jason Statham watched the first movie in Paris in 2001 while they were taking a break from filming The Transporter (2002).
Leterrier began filming in London once scheduling and contractual issues were resolved; he later admitted that he initially turned down the offer to direct the movie because it would be a “massive” task. However, he later used parts of Lin’s original contributions, such as the crew that was already in place and Lin’s shot lists and storyboards, to complete the movie.
Scenes of Fast X were shot at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, and production in London came to an end in mid-August. Later, Rodriguez admitted that a fight scene between her and Theron was recorded without the involvement of a primary director while the studio was in talks with Leterrier. Upon being notified by producer Jeff Kirschenbaum of the change in direction, Ritchson originally believed he would lose the role of Aimes. Kirschenbaum, however, swiftly reassured Ritchson that he would still be in Fast X but would not work with Lin.
Leterrier described his approach to the movie as “more practical than other directors, and I brought [the franchise] back to earth,” indicating that he preferred more realistic stunts (such as the return of racing scenes involving a “vertical quarter mile race”) enhanced by visual effects as opposed to the extensive use of computer-generated imagery (CGI) in the most recent entries.

In mid-May, Genzano di Roma was the location for filming. Rome was the location for two weeks of filming in the middle of May and one week of filming in the middle of July. Locations included the Via Cristoforo Colombo, Lungotevere, Via dei Fori Imperiali, Ponte Umberto I, Ponte Vittorio Emanuele II, and the vicinity of the Castel Sant’Angelo and the Spanish Steps.
Then, between May 24 and June 6, action scenes were filmed in Turin at the Piazza Crimea, Corso Fiume, Murazzi del Po, Via Roma, and Piazza IV Marzo. Momoa started his scene-capturing on May 16. Diesel oversaw the writing and design of the action sequences, as he had in earlier instalments. Unnamed sources told The Hollywood Reporter that Diesel was “demanding” and a perfectionist, and that his creative control and frequent last-minute changes reflected “a process [which] is like a mosaic that doesn’t stop moving.”
A stuntman was reportedly hurt in an accident on June 6 after being struck by a piece of a car during an explosion. Rodriguez revealed she had finished filming her sequences on July 22 and that “only four [or] five weeks [are] left” in the production in an interview with Deadline Hollywood while attending San Diego Comic-Con.

These locals asserted that the franchise turned their neighbourhood into a popular gathering place for fans to participate in street racing and other risky activities and that the protest was intended to raise awareness of the importance of driving safety instruction. Other parts of the movie were shot in Portugal, including in Lisbon, Viseu, and Vila Real, after the demonstration on August 26. Conceiço Azevedo, the mayor of Viseu, revealed during an interview with Lusa News Agency that filming would occur on IP5, a road in the Vouzela municipality.
By August 16, Ritchson had finished filming his sequences. He alluded that “we’re going to take it to the sky” to suggest that there would be flying automobiles in the movie.
Box Office:
Fast X has earned $146 million in North America (the United States and Canada) and $573.4 million abroad as of August 3, 2023, for a total worldwide revenue of $719.4 million. According to TheWrap, the movie would need to make between $800 million and $850 million to break even.
Tickets for Fast X went on sale in the US and Canada at midnight on February 9, 2023, a day before the trailer debut. Fast X was reported to be the sixth-most anticipated movie of the summer, according to a Fandango study that polled over 6,000 ticket buyers between February and March 2023. Box office forecasts for the movie’s debut weekend in April 2023 predicted that it would bring in $65-75 million. Estimates had been reduced to $60 million by the week before its publication.

The movie brought in $28 million on its opening day, which also included $7.5 million from Thursday previews. It eventually broke box office records with a debut of $67 million from 4,046 locations. In an article for TheWrap, Jeremy Fuster claimed that Fast X might not be as financially successful as some of its predecessors, pointing to the movie’s unexpectedly higher overall production expense (at 70% more than F9) and the anticipated high marketing expenditure. The movie dropped 66 per cent to $23 million on its second weekend, placing second to The Little Mermaid, a newcomer. Fast X earned $9.2 million for its third weekend, a decline of 61%, and came in fourth.
Release Date of Fast X:
On May 17, 2023, Fast X was first made available in Belgium, France, Sweden, Chile, India, the United States and Canada. On May 18, it was made available in China. The ninth and tenth movies’ original release dates were revealed by Diesel in February 2016, with the tenth movie’s initial date of release scheduled for April 2, 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the release of F9 was postponed until the tenth movie, and then the tenth movie’s release date was postponed indefinitely.

Diesel specified a planned release window for the tenth and eleventh movies as February 2023 and February 2024 in June 2021. Fast X’s scheduled release date of April 7, 2023, was formally revealed in August. The movie was extensively released in IMAX and other high-end large formats after being postponed until May 2023 in December.
On May 12, 2023, Fast X made its international debut on the red carpet in Rome. Fast & Furious movies have made over $1.2 billion in China since the release of Fast & Furious 6 (2013), and China was one of the first countries to release F9 (2021), being five weeks ahead of its domestic release. The movie was approved for release in China on March 28, 2023, making it one of the first major American films released in the country in 2023.
