Deadpool 3 (2024) Movie Review: A Perfect Blend of Humor and Superhero Action

Deadpool 3

Deadpool 3

Introduction of Deadpool 3:

Based on the Marvel Comics character Deadpool, the untitled Deadpool movie, often referred to as Deadpool 3, is a forthcoming American superhero movie that will be released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and produced by Marvel Studios and Maximum Effort. The planned film is a sequel to Deadpool (2016) Deadpool 2 (2018) and the 34th picture in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Shawn Levy is directing Deadpool 3 based on a screenplay written by Zeb Wells, Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, and Paul Wernick. Alongside Hugh Jackman, Morena Baccarin, Jennifer Garner, and Brianna Hildebrand, Reynolds plays Wade Wilson/Deadpool. After 20th Century Fox closed its acquisition of the company in March 2019, work on a third Deadpool movie was put on hold. Production on Deadpool 3 had started by November 2016.

Marvel Studios was subsequently granted control of the character and tasked with creating a new film starring Reynolds. As the first MCU movie to receive an R rating, it unites Deadpool with the franchise and is anticipated to keep it. After Reese and Wernick returned from the previous movie, Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin wrote the script of Deadpool 3, which was revised by March 2022.

The director of Deadpool 3 at the time was Levy. August 2022 saw Jackman decide to play Wolverine again in the X-Men movies, with more casting to follow in early 2023. In May of that year, filming of Deadpool 3 got underway in Norfolk and London and Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, England. The 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike forced a suspension of filming in July; however, with the strike ending in November, filming of Deadpool 3 is anticipated to resume before the end of the month. Vancouver, Canada is anticipated to host filming as well.

Phase Five of the MCU will see Deadpool 3 arrive in theaters on July 26, 2024, in the United States.

Storyline:

The third movie may capitalize even more on the time-travel theme that was a major component of Deadpool 2 and even utilize it to subtly introduce the character to the larger MCU.

Deadpool is probably going to focus on the characters’ meta-move from 20th Century Fox to the MCU, based on the character cameos from X-Men and the set sequences (check them out below). At some point, Deadpool and Wolverine will probably square off in combat.

Furthermore, several Marvel officials have repeatedly said that Deadpool 3 will maintain its R rating and won’t require any tone-downs, even though Deadpool is now under the Disney umbrella. Levy continued by describing the movie as “raw,” “audacious,” and unrecognizable from previous Marvel Cinematic Universe productions.

According to Shawn Levy, “Our movie is raw, audacious, and very much R-rated,” as said to Deadline. We tried not to film it on soundstages that have been digitally enhanced. Online photo galleries from our session attest to that,” Levy went on. However, we preferred something authentic and grounded.

In my opinion, the movie is not so much an Airplane as it is a hybrid of Midnight Run, 48 Hours, and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, starring Hugh Jackman in his most well-known role with Ryan Reynolds. The movie, according to many fans, is going to be a loose adaptation of the “Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe” plot, with Owen Wilson’s Mobius and the TVA chasing the antihero through multiple realities while he creates all kinds of gory chaos.

Filming of Deadpool 3:

Following the triumph of Deadpool (2016), 20th Century Fox started work on two follow-up films. X-Force was supposed to be a superhero team in the third movie. In November 2016, Deadpool 3 director Tim Miller decided not to return for the sequels because of creative issues with star Ryan Reynolds. David Leitch was then brought in to helm Deadpool 2 (2018).

For the third film’s development, Fox was searching for a different director. Deadpool and Deadpool 2 co-writer Rhett Reese announced in March 2017 that X-Force would make its screen debut in Deadpool 2 and then appear in a spin-off movie that would introduce “something bigger,” independent of Deadpool 3, which would be more intimate.

Deadpool will be integrated into the PG-13 Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), according to Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger, who also stated that Disney was willing to produce R-rated Deadpool films “as long as we let the audiences know what’s coming” when the company announced its acquisition of 21st Century Fox in December 2017. He went on to say that characters such as Deadpool might have their own “Marvel-R brand”.

Reese and his writing partner Paul Wernick felt a third film would happen once Reynolds took a sabbatical from the character and the X-Force picture was released. In May 2018, Reynolds stated that Deadpool 3 might not be filmed given the franchise’s shift of attention to X-Force. They made a comparison between this and the 2012 crossover movie The Avengers, which was released between Iron Man 2 (2010) and Iron Man 3 (2013).

If the “time and place” were right, Leitch would be open to returning for another Deadpool movie. By August 2018, a third Deadpool movie was said to be in development, with Atlanta, Georgia serving as the production location instead of Vancouver, where the previous two movies were filmed. At the end of the year, the PG-13 adaptation of Deadpool 2, Once Upon a Deadpool, was released. Marvel Studios and Disney closely examined it to see how it would influence how they would handle the character in the PG-13 MCU. Deadpool 3 movie is in development, and Reynolds confirmed this while promoting Once Upon a Deadpool.

Reynolds stated that Deadpool 3 would take a “completely different direction.” Later, Reynolds disclosed that the plan was for the movie to be a road trip movie in the vein of Rashomon (1950), with Hugh Jackman’s X-Men character James “Logan” Howlett / Wolverine. In 2016, Jackman saw Deadpool, even though he was officially done as Wolverine. That night, he got an idea for a team-up movie with Reynolds that was influenced by 48 Hours (1982).

Deadpool 3 rights to certain Marvel Comics characters, including Deadpool and the X-Men, was purchased by Marvel Studios with Disney’s official acquisition of Fox in March 2019. “On hold” were the Marvel-based movies that Fox was working on. After playing Cable in Deadpool 2, Josh Brolin disclosed in June 2019 that he had multiple discussions with Marvel Studios about his future as the character. In the MCU, Brolin also played Thanos. Zazie Beetz declared in October that she would be shocked if she wasn’t cast as Domino in a follow-up to Deadpool 2.

In that same month, Reese, Wernick, and Reynolds said that they were taking a “much-needed rest from Deadpool” while they awaited word from Marvel Studios regarding the line’s future. They declared that a sequel to Deadpool would be produced, that it would be rated R, just like the previous movies, and that it would include the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

After Fox revealed that Disney was buying the company, Reese said that they would now have to “land on the right idea and once we do, I think we’ll be off to the races.” Between their weariness after finishing Deadpool 2 and the announcement, according to Wernick, there was never a formal proposal for a third Deadpool film. After all, the writers reasoned, there would be a larger cast of characters in the MCU to play Deadpool’s enemies than the small number of villains Fox controlled for the first few movies.

Reynolds disclosed at the time that he was having a meeting with Marvel Studios. Reynolds stated in December that “the whole team” and he was working on a Deadpool movie at Marvel Studios. Reynolds persuaded Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige to cast Wolverine in the movie during his talks with the studio, but he was informed that this would not be achievable.

Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin were hired to write the script for the upcoming Deadpool movie in November 2020 after Reynolds and Marvel Studios held meetings with prospective writers in October 2020. Reynolds and Marvel Studios believed the writers’ proposal matched their plans for the movie, which would stay R-rated. Leitch wasn’t expected to return for the movie because of other commitments in 2021, and he wasn’t engaged in picking the writers, but Reynolds and Marvel Studios were open to it.

Leitch said that he had met with Marvel to discuss the movie, but all parties were aware that his schedule and other obligations would keep him from going back. The movie will be set in the MCU and have an R-rating, Feige confirmed in January 2021. Filming, according to Feige, would not start until after 2021 because of Reynolds’s hectic schedule, who was overseeing the scriptwriting process at the time.

He claimed that Deadpool was a very different kind of Marvel Cinematic Universe figure. In a commercial for Free Guy (2021) titled Deadpool and Korg React, Reynolds and Waititi played Deadpool and Waititi’s MCU character Korg, respectively. This was done to promote the movie. In the advertisement, Deadpool talks about joining the MCU with Korg, breaking the fourth wall.

Feige quickly verified Reynolds’ prediction that filming would start in 2022, which he had made the previous month. He claimed that Marvel Studios had a schedule in mind for the movie’s release. Rob Delaney and Zazie Beetz announced in November that they would like to reprise their roles as Peter and Domino from Deadpool 2, but Beetz eventually decided against it. Reynolds claimed they were “plugging away” at the movie at the time.

The film’s director, Shawn Levy, who previously helmed Reynolds in Free Guy and The Adam Project (2022), was officially announced in March 2022. Due to his hectic schedule for the rest of the year, Levy stated that filming will not start until after 2022. Reynolds also announced that Reese and Wernick had been brought in to rework the screenplay and that his production company, Maximum Effort, would co-produce the movie.

Given the popularity of the previous movies, the duo stated in June that they were thrilled to incorporate MCU aspects into the story and that Disney and Marvel approved of the MCU humour they were creating for Deadpool. They said that answering this question could reveal narrative information and would not clarify if they were rewriting the Molyneux sisters’ original script or beginning from scratch. It was also confirmed in June that Raymond Chan, who had previously worked on the Disney+ MCU television series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), was the production designer.

In July, Feige declared that the movie would be improved upon the prior two in a manner akin to other third entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, like Captain America: Civil War (2016), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), and Avengers: Infinity War (2018). He went on to say that collaborating with Reynolds was enjoyable.

The main photography for the project, titled Tidal Wave, started on May 22, 2023, in London and at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, England. George Richmond, who previously collaborated with Levy and Reynolds on Free Guy, is the cinematographer. The original plan was for filming to start in January 2023 and wrap up in April 2023. Other than Reynolds not being allowed to contribute to the script during filming, as he had done during the previous two films, by the strike guidelines, it was not anticipated to be impacted by the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike, which started in early May.

According to reports, Marvel Studios intended to shoot as much of the film as possible during primary filming and reshoot it during the pre-scheduled period to fix any writing issues. Levy knew that the production schedule for Deadpool 3 would conflict with that of Stranger Things before the latter was postponed due to a writers’ strike, so he worked with Marvel Studios and the creatives of the Netflix series on which Levy is an executive producer to permit him to direct at least one episode of the final season of that show.

May 3, 2024, was chosen as the new release date for the movie in June. In early July 2023, on-location filming for a vehicle crash scenario took place in London. It was soon announced that Jennifer Garner, who had played Elektra in the Fox-produced movies Daredevil (2003) and Elektra (2005), would be joining the movie as the character. Filming with Reynolds and Jackman also happened in Norfolk; to make it seem genuine and authentic, the production crew chose to shoot on location rather than in a set.

The 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike caused production to be halted on July 14. Before the shutdown, filming had been completed to midway point. It was scheduled to restart when the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes ended, allowing Levy and Reynolds to edit the previously shot material and start work on the special effects.

Levy pointed out that while certain casting rumours—like the one about Taylor Swift making a cameo as Dazzler—were real, others weren’t. The scene before the attack was shot in a way that Levy compared to the lightsaber battle in Return of the Jedi (1983). This reminded the stunt team of that moment’s blocking, pacing, and framing, which they used to inform the Deadpool 3 action. During the strike, Disney made payments to maintain the sets from the movie.

Deadpool 3 and other movies in the middle of production at the beginning of the strikes were reportedly the studios’ top priorities to pick back up after the SAG-AFTRA strike ended. Levy asked in October 2023 if the movie would be able to keep its May 2024 release date considering that the SAG-AFTRA strike was still in effect at the time. Shortly after, it was revealed that the movie would probably not make it to May 2024 and would probably be released later in that year even if filming could resume by early 2024.

Deadpool versus Wolverine, Deadpool and Wolverine, and Deadpool 3 With Wolverine were among the titles Levy mentioned for the movie while they were still debating their possibilities. Filming was scheduled to resume in London during the next two weeks before Thanksgiving following the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike on November 9. Reynolds then revealed that Dogpool would make an appearance in the movie, and the movie’s July 26, 2024 release date was also pushed back. Vancouver is also anticipated to host filming.
