The 13th Warrior (1999) – Most Flopped Movie

It is the most flopped movie of Hollywood. A loose retelling of the Beowulf story blended with Ahmad ibn Fadlan’s factual account of the Volga Vikings, Eaters of the Dead by Michael Crichton was the inspiration for the 1999 American historical action movie “The 13th Warrior”. Along with Diane Venora and Omar Sharif, it also features Antonio Banderas as Ibn Fadlan. Crichton oversaw some uncredited retakes while John McTiernan served as the director. The film was produced by McTiernan, Crichton, and Ned Dowd; Andrew G. Vajna, James Biggam, and Ethan Dubrow acted as executive producers.
Ahmad ibn Fadlan served as the court poet to the Abbasid Caliph Al-Muqtadir of Baghdad before being deported as an “ambassador” to the Volga Bulgars as a result of an extramarital affair with the wife of a great noble. The Norsemen show up just in time to save Melchisidek, his father’s previous traveling partner, and their caravan from Tatar assaults. Since one of the Norsemen, Herger, speaks Latin, they can communicate through Melchisidek when he takes safety at their hamlet on the Volga River. Both individuals discover through Herger that the Norsemen’s festival is actually a wake for their recently deceased monarch. Additionally, Herger introduces them to Buliwyf, one of the king’s sons.
Buliwyf murders his brother during a battle that Ahmad and Melchisidek witness, establishing Buliwyf as the heir apparent. The slain king is then customarily burnt aboard a Viking ship that has been abandoned, together with a female slave who promises to give herself up in exchange for the opportunity to travel with him to Valhalla, the Norse afterlife (or “heaven”).
